Pine Barrens Tree Frog, Hyla andersonii
When you hear this call, you know you're in the love den of a Pine Barrens Treefrog, which lives in the New Jersey Pine Barrens as well as in isolated pockets in Florida and North and South Carolina. Many folks think of tree frogs as native to tropical rain forests, but there are several species native to the United States. The Pine Barrens Treefrog is interesting in that it can thrive in water of higher acidity than most amphibians and often lays its eggs in shallow, acidic ponds. The Pine Barrens Treefrog is quite shy and is generally most noticeable at mating time. It was listed as an endangered from 1977-1983, when several new populations were discovered and the designation was removed. Learn more about this species
