Yellow-throated Vireo  Vireo flavifrons

Description  ADULT Has yellowish green upperparts and bright yellow lores, eyering, throat, and breast; underparts are otherwise white. Dark wings have pale fringes to inner flight feathers and two white wing bars. Legs are blue-gray. JUVENILE Similar to adult.

Dimensions  Length: 6" (15 cm)

Habitat  Common summer visitor (mainly Apr-Aug) to deciduous and mixed woodland in eastern North America. Winters mainly in Central America.

Observation Tips  Easy to identify, but often hard to locate in the first instance; learn and listen for the call and song.

Range  Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, Western Canada, Southeast, New England, Texas, Southwest, Eastern Canada, Florida, Plains, California, Rocky Mountains

Voice  Song is a repeated zse'eret, tchu-et; calls include harsh tche notes.

Discussion  Striking and colorful vireo, with a disproportionately large head and stout bill. Forages for insects in a deliberate manner and easily overlooked when feeding in dappled foliage. Sexes are similar.
