Acadia National Park

Description  ADULT Has greenish cap, back, and rump. Face, sides of neck, and nape are gray. Eye has pale iris, with dark line in front and is surrounded by yellow "spectacle" and supercilium extending forward. Darkish wings have two white wing bars. Throat is white and underparts are otherwise pale with gray wash on chest and yellow wash on flanks. Bill is stout and legs are blue-gray. JUVENILE Similar, but paler, with dark iris and white eyering. Acquires adultlike plumage and pale iris in winter.

Dimensions  Length: 5 in (13 cm)

Habitat  Common summer visitor (mainly Apr-Sep) to dense, brushy deciduous woodland; widespread in eastern North America. Winters from southeastern U.S. to Mexico.

Observation Tips  Easier to hear than to see.

Range  Mid-Atlantic, Eastern Canada, Plains, Southeast, Texas, Great Lakes, New England, Florida

Voice  Song is a series of loud phrases such as chic, chip-ee-err-cheeo; call is a harsh shrrr.

Discussion  Pale-eyed, secretive vireo that is heard more frequently than it is seen. Feeds mainly on insects and forages in a deliberate manner. Sexes are similar.
